Chimney Sweeping
Regular sweeping is essential, as it helps keep your home safe and your chimney in good condition.

Why Chimneys Need Sweeping
Regular sweeping keeps your fire system safe and working well. Whether you use an open fire, a wood burner, or a multi-fuel stove, soot and creosote build up each time you burn fuel. These deposits attract debris such as cobwebs, leaves and even small nests, which can block the flue.
A blocked chimney increases fire risk. When you light a fire under a blocked flue, smoke and fumes can blow back into your room. This includes carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell. Creosote can also ignite inside the flue, causing a dangerous chimney fire.
Our sweeps follow the latest Sweep Safe guidelines. We inspect the flue, the chimney pot, the stove pipe, and any flexible liners before deciding on the best cleaning method. This ensures your appliance works safely and meets insurance requirements.
Keeping your chimney clean helps your fire burn more efficiently, reduces smoke, and protects your home.

How Often Chimneys Need Sweeping
Chimneys and flues need regular cleaning, no matter the fuel type. Sweep Safe guidance suggests the following:
- Smokeless fuel: At least once a year
- Wood: Quarterly when in use
- Bituminous coal: Quarterly when in use
- Oil: Once a year
- Gas: Once a year
If you are re-opening a disused chimney, cleaning it first is essential. Old soot can soak into walls or cause strong smells. If you move home, it is wise to sweep the chimney before first use, as you cannot know when it was last cleaned.
Regular sweeping maintains a strong draught, helps fuel burn hotter, and keeps your room free from smoke.

A full sweep for an open fire, wood burner or stove usually takes about 1 hour, though we allow extra time if the chimney is very dirty. We prepare the area with dust sheets and protective covers to keep your room clean.
It’s important that you remove ornaments around the hearth, ahead of time, to ensure safe access. We then inspect the stove, flue, chimney stack and terminal. Using either traditional rods and brushes or a modern rotary power sweep, we clear soot, creosote and blockages with care.
Once the sweep is complete, we check the draught and ensure the flue is drawing correctly. We also offer advice on fuel types, fire-lighting and long-term maintenance.
A regular chimney sweep is essential home care. It keeps your appliance efficient, reduces risk, and protects your property.
