Checking Safety and Performance

What Is Chimney Integrity Testing?

Chimney integrity testing checks whether a flue safely contains combustion gases.

It helps identify:

  • Cracks or leaks in the flue
  • Faulty or deteriorating liners
  • Dangerous escape routes for smoke or gases
  • Poor draft performance
  • Defects affecting compliance or appliance safety

Testing is often recommended before stove installation, after property alterations, or when reopening older chimneys.

Chimney Flue Inspections

A flue inspection helps assess the condition and suitability of a chimney before use.

We inspect for:

  • Structural defects
  • Blockages and obstructions
  • Liner condition
  • Tar and creosote build-up
  • Signs of leakage
  • Ventilation and terminal issues

Where required, we can advise on remedial works before an appliance is commissioned.

THE TRADITIONAL METHOD

Chimney Smoke Testing

A smoke test is a recognised traditional chimney integrity test.

It remains an important method for checking leakage and confirming flue performance.

How Smoke Testing Works

We seal the chimney at the top and bottom.

Non-toxic smoke is introduced into the flue.

We then inspect for smoke leakage in:

  • Rooms above fireplaces
  • Loft spaces
  • Adjacent rooms
  • Shared chimney structures
  • Neighbouring properties where relevant

We also inspect externally to ensure smoke exits correctly from the terminal.

When a Smoke Test May Be Needed

Smoke testing is commonly used:

  • After installing a new stove or fire
  • When reopening a disused chimney
  • Following chimney repairs
  • When leaks are suspected
  • To support Part J compliance

GREATER PRECISION

Advanced Chimney Pressure Testing

For greater precision, we also offer sealed chimney pressure testing using the Wöhler system.

This is widely regarded as one of the most accurate methods of chimney integrity testing.

How Pressure Testing Works

Using specialist equipment:

  • The flue is sealed internally
  • A specialist inflatable test bladder is fitted
  • Controlled air pressure is introduced
  • Leakage rates are measured automatically
  • Results are assessed to BS EN 1443
  • A clear pass or fail report is produced

Why Choose Pressure Testing?

Greater Accuracy

Pressure testing provides measurable results and removes guesswork.

Minimal Disruption

There is no need to access multiple rooms or neighbouring properties.

Faster Testing

Most tests can be completed within an hour.

Professional Certification

You receive documented results for compliance, insurance or property transactions.

Ideal for Fault Finding

Pressure testing can detect problems often missed by visual checks alone.
