Chimney Smoke Tests

A smoke test checks how well your chimney draws and how safely it carries fumes out of your home. This test is essential for open fires, wood burners and stoves. It confirms the flue is working as it should and that smoke is not escaping into rooms, lofts or neighbouring properties.

During the test we block the chimney top and release a small smoke pellet at the base of the flue. We then watch how the smoke behaves. If smoke leaks through cracks, gaps or damaged joints, we can identify the problem straight away. Poor draught, slow movement or backflow all point to issues that need attention.

A smoke test is often required when you install a new stove, open up a closed fireplace or buy a property with an older chimney. It provides peace of mind that your system is safe to use and meets building regulations.

Flue Inspections

A flue inspection helps us assess the full condition of your chimney from top to bottom. Many problems start inside the flue where you cannot see them. Cracks, heavy creosote, nesting, fallen masonry and liner damage can all reduce safety and performance.

We begin with a visual check of the appliance, flue connection and chimney terminal. We then inspect the internal flue using specialist tools to assess the shape, size and integrity of the passageway. This helps us confirm whether your chimney is suitable for the appliance you use.

If we find anything unclear or suspicious, we may suggest a CCTV chimney survey. This uses a high-definition camera to travel through the entire chimney. It gives a clear picture of the flue walls and pinpoints any damage or blockages. It is ideal when buying a property, renovating a fireplace or investigating smoke problems or poor draught.

A proper flue inspection ensures your system is safe, efficient and ready for regular use.
